EV racing & telemetry
From ESP32 sensors to race-day decisions: a live telemetry system built for an electric race car.
The problem
An electric racing team needs to understand battery use and endurance while the car is on track. I built a system that brings those measurements into a dashboard the team can use during a race.
My contribution
- Contributed to the car build from Grade 10 and led the school EV team in Grades 11–12.
- Coordinated mechanical, electrical, and software work, vehicle testing, and race strategy.
- Built the ESP32/LoRa telemetry pipeline, Python/Flask backend, and JavaScript dashboard.
- Added physics-based power estimates, runtime and remaining-lap predictions, and driver-consistency analytics.
How it works
Sensor readings travel from the vehicle over LoRa to the backend and dashboard. The dashboard combines live measurements with estimates of power use and endurance, giving the team useful context for pace decisions.
- Vehicle sensors
- ESP32 + LoRa
- Flask backend
- Race dashboard
The engineering challenge
Connecting hardware, wireless communication, and software into a reliable race-day workflow, with live measurements and endurance estimates available in one dashboard.
Outcome
The telemetry system was used in races and supported a top-10 team finish in Grade 11. In Grade 10, our team earned 1st place in Workmanship and 3rd place in Technical Innovation.
